The RAMMY Awards Gala Hosts New Activations & Partners for 2018
36th Annual Event Returned to the Walter E. Washington Convention Center June 10
Washington, DC (June 2018)—On Sunday, June 10, the 36th Annual RAMMY Awards returned to the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, bringing together culinary artists from across the region for one of the top black-tie events of the season. A centerpiece of the summer, the awards are an enduring celebration of the region’s world renowned culinary scene, hosted by Restaurant Association Metropolitan Washington (RAMW) in partnership with its sponsor Events DC.
“This year’s RAMMYS theme encompassed the creativity of the industry and how art, music, and design come together to set the stage for dining experiences,” said RAMW President & CEO Kathy E. Hollinger. “We couldn’t wait for RAMMYS guests to experience these unique touches while we honored the region’s talented stars who continue to raise the culinary bar.”
“The talent and awards showcased at The RAMMYS not only reinforced our incredible local restaurant and hospitality industry but also helped to continue to propel Washington, DC as a world-class destination on a global stage,” said Gregory A. O’Dell, president and chief executive officer of Events DC. “Coupled with the recent accomplishment by the Washington Capitals’ as Stanley Cup Champions, it is a great moment in time to work, play and visit Washington, DC. Congratulations to our partner, RAMW for their ongoing citywide efforts and contributions to our hospitality industry and to all of the 2018 RAMMY Awards winners.”
Local artists activated onsite throughout the evening. Kelly Walker, known for her abstract pieces that create a state of exploring and developing, created a live art installation during the opening reception. Upstairs in the ballroom after the awards ceremony, the versatile team from No Kings Collective, known for over the top, authentic experiences, created live murals as part of the ballroom décor. Music is a major creative driver of the restaurant industry, whether allowing chefs to find inspiration, restaurant teams to rock out before service, or an added pleasure for guests to enjoy the atmosphere. This year, RAMMYS guests had the unique experience of moving through “listening zones” in different areas during the opening reception. The featured music, a curated collection of Spotify playlists from area chefs and restaurateur finalists, was made up of what they like to play in their restaurants, while prepping in the kitchen, in the dining rooms, and what inspires them daily.
As DC is a global culinary destination, featured food and drink pavilions at the RAMMYS were provided by ProChile, Embassy of the Republic of Korea, Peru's Trade and Investment Office in DC, Embassy of Argentina, Embassy of Tunisia, Heineken, with wine and specialty cocktails from Republic National Distributing Company, among other offerings.
Mayor Muriel Bowser also attended to present the Honorary Milestone Award to Tony and Joe’s Seafood Place, as this DC staple celebrated 30 years as a Washington Harbour landmark. DJ Neekola once again spun the beats throughout the evening and OM Digital Photo Booths allowed guests to capture the moment, while guests enjoyed endless food and drink sampling opportunities from local and abroad partners.
Presented by the Restaurant Association Metropolitan Washington (RAMW), The RAMMY Awards Gala honors the exceptional ability and accomplishments of the hard-working individuals and organizations of the region’s restaurants and foodservice community. Named the #1 Food & Restaurant event by BIZBASH Magazine since 2009, The RAMMYS celebrate one of Metropolitan Washington’s greatest assets: Its restaurants.
