DC Jazz Festival Announces Lineup for Jazz in the ‘Hoods Presented by Events DC

WASHINGTON, May 12, 2017 — The DC Jazz Festival (DCJF) is pleased to announce the schedule for Jazz in the ‘Hoods Presented by Events DC, a vital component of the DC JazzFest (June 9-18).  Spotlighting the District as a vibrant cultural capital, Jazz in the ‘Hoods brings jazz to all four quadrants and eight Wards of the nation’s capital, with performances at more than 20 neighborhood venues.

"We’re excited to continue our partnership with the DC Jazz Festival in presenting Jazz in the ‘Hoods for the eighth-consecutive year,” said Erik A. Moses, senior vice president and managing director of sports, entertainment and special events at Events DC. “This week-long event is a one-of-a-kind experience that rallies residents and visitors together in the city’s most diverse and culturally-rich neighborhoods to celebrate the distinct music genre of jazz."
Jazz in the ‘Hoods represents an exciting DC JazzFest partnership with DC clubs, restaurants, hotels, museums, and more in celebration of jazz in our nation’s capital. This year, these partnerships have grown to include Dance Place, presenting the enticing performance In Jazz We Trust: Music in Motion on June 10 and 11, by the acclaimed choreographer Princess Mhoon. The Jazz in the ‘Hoods schedule presents a mix of DC resident-artists proudly representing, celebrating and expanding the genre. Our Jazz in the ‘Hoods component attracts large, diverse audiences of both DC metro area residents and visitors to our nation’s capital.

For the 7th straight year, Jazz in the ‘Hoods will include the CapitalBop Jazz Loft Series.  One of DC JazzFest’s signature partnerships, CapitalBop presents vibrant, intriguingly edgy musicians in alternative venues, as well as DC-based musicians grounded in the jazz tradition and beyond.
Returning for its 6th year, the East River Jazz Series presents free and affordably-priced jazz performances and programs to thousands of residents east of the Anacostia River. The East River Jazz Series presents in neighborhoods not otherwise served by live jazz performances.
With a variety of free and ticketed performances in more than 20 neighborhoods, including Adams Morgan, Capitol Hill, Chinatown, Downtown, Dupont Circle, Foggy Bottom, Georgetown, Capitol Riverfront, Mount Pleasant, Kenilworth and Eastland Gardens, the H Street Corridor, Southeast, Southwest, Takoma Park, Trinidad, the U Street Corridor and Van Ness, Jazz in the ‘Hoods annually attracts vibrant audiences of thousands of music enthusiasts.
The University of the District of Columbia is once again partnering with DCJF on music and education programs. The Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage will host the Bass-ically Yours Series, six free concerts highlighting the wealth of bass-playing bandleaders on the DC scene. Transparent Productions, the DC area’s purveyor of exceptional performances, will once again bring their unique cutting edge flavor to the DC JazzFest.
In addition to CapitalBop's D.C. Jazz Loft Series, Dance Place, and the East River Jazz/Be Mo Jazz Series, other venue partners include Twins Jazz, Sixth & I Historic Synagogue, Kennedy Center Millennium Stage, Atlas Performing Arts Center, Mr. Henry's, Rumba Café, and National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden, among others.
“Jazz in the ‘Hoods is a classic manifestation of the DC JazzFest’s diverse, ‘big tent’ offerings, partnering with vibrant spaces and adventurous presenters around town to bring exciting artistry to our community,” said Willard Jenkins, the DCJF’s Artistic Director.
