40th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Parade
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Parade in DC was established in 1977 by the late Dr. Calvin W. Rolark, founder of The Washington Informer and co-founder of the United Black Fund. Under Dr. Rolark and fellow community civic leaders, the District of Columbia became one of the first jurisdictions in the nation to hold a parade honoring the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. that helped to establish a national holiday in his honor. January 18, 2021 marked DC’s 40th annual Martin Luther King Parade. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its effects on communities in the District, this year’s parade and related events were held virtually.
“Now is the time for us to take all that we have and pay it forward,” said Stuart Anderson, MLK parade co-chair and logistics coordinator.

Anacostia Community Museum Kicks Off Yearlong “Our Food, Our Future” Exhibit with Feed the Fridge Program
Beginning late January 2021, the Anacostia Community Museum (ACM) will host a program aimed at closing the gap around food insecurity, entitled Feed the Fridge.
Part of a larger effort across the District of Columbia Metropolitan area by Medium Rare restaurateur Mark Bucher, Feed the Fridge is an effort to bring nourishment where there is hunger in DC area communities while helping pandemic-battered restaurants stay in business and avoid staff cuts.
ACM encourages sharing information about this tremendous resource with those who may need it. Each morning at 10:30 AM, Monday through Friday, food is delivered and refrigerators are stocked by the restaurant following COVID-19 safety guidelines.
The meals are available in the refrigerators without any code or lock, allowing access without barriers. Individuals are encouraged to take as many meals as they may need for that day. This program will kick off the ACM’s “Our Food, Our Future,” a yearlong focus on food history, culture, and justice in the District.
The exhibit opens this spring along with educational programming to complement the themes. If you have questions about the Feed the Fridge program, or about any of ACM’s programs, please contact Katelynd Anderson at andersonk2@si.edu.

Cozy Christmas Express Spreads Joy to Ward 8 Families
On December 19, 2020, Events DC hosted its Sixth Annual Cozy Christmas holiday event, a winter wonderland themed celebration for children and families residing in the District of Columbia’s Ward 8 community.
To ensure the safety of all guests, this year’s Cozy Christmas Express had a different look and feel due to strictly enforced COVID-19 safety precautions that required face coverings, the admittance of one family at a time into the venue and maintaining social distancing in line outside.
Youth and their families, identified by elected officials and Ward 8 non-profit organizations, entered the R.I.S.E. Demonstration Center which was decorated with Christmas trees, reindeer and other festive décor. Once inside, youth were provided with a gift and the opportunity to take a holiday family portrait via Eagle Eye Photos.
We look forward to seeing our neighbors at next year’s Cozy Christmas, as we hope to celebrate in person in 2021!.
