Embassy Recipe: Ukraine

Syrnyky (сирники) are a treasured staple of Ukrainian cuisine and a quintessential part of our breakfast traditions. These golden, pan-fried cheesecakes, crafted from fresh farmer’s cheese (tvorog), eggs, flour, and a hint of sugar, evoke the comforting and nostalgic flavors of home. Typically served with sour cream, honey, or seasonal fruit preserves, syrnyky are a must-eat dish in Ukraine, embodying the heart and soul of our culinary identity. Alongside other beloved breakfast classics like mlyntsi (thin Ukrainian pancakes), syrnyky have graced the Ukrainian table for generations, making every morning meal a delight.

Deeply rooted in Ukraine’s agricultural heritage, syrnyky are a celebration of farm-fresh ingredients and the simple yet satisfying cuisine that defines our nation’s traditions. They hold a special place in family gatherings and everyday routines, often reminding Ukrainians of the warmth of rural life and shared moments with loved ones.

As part of the DC Chef Challenge, we are proud to bring syrnyky to an international audience through our Ruta restaurants and culinary diplomacy efforts. By sharing this cherished breakfast dish, we aim to preserve and promote Ukraine’s rich culture, timeless culinary artistry, and heritage of hospitality. Syrnyky are more than food - they are a symbol of the resilience and beauty of Ukraine, connecting hearts and cultures across borders.
