Notre Dame Global Partnerships (NDGP), the multimedia rightsholder for the University of Notre Dame Athletics Department, in conjunction with Citi, NBC Sports, and Notre Dame Athletics, is pleased to announce the matchup for the second annual Citi Shamrock Classic. This year's edition, featuring the University of Illinois as the Fighting Irish's opponent, will air live on NBC and stream on Peacock at 1 p.m. ET on Saturday, November 18th from Washington, D.C.
The Citi Shamrock Classic is a nationally presented basketball game that serves to elevate, educate and spotlight women. In addition to the highly anticipated match-up on Saturday, a women’s leadership luncheon offering both teams an opportunity to hear from a select group of the most powerful women in business and sports will be held on Friday. Additionally, both teams will help make an impact on local D.C. youth by participating in a community service initiative presented by Gatorade.
“We are so excited to participate in the second annual Citi Shamrock Classic after last year's great success,” said Karen and Kevin Keyes Family Head Coach Niele Ivey. “Washington, D.C. was and continues to be the starting point of so many initiatives promoting equality across our country. There is no better place to play a game like this — one that is bigger than basketball — and we cannot wait to face Illinois in another historic matchup on NBC and Peacock.”
Entertainment & Sports Arena, home of the WNBA Washington Mystics, will host this marquee women's basketball match-up.
On the heels of the 50th anniversary of Title IX, Washington, D.C. assumes a significant role as the backdrop for this event. It is in this very city that Congress enacted the federal civil rights law, fostering a surge in female participation in organized sports and paving the way for greater equality in education.
“We’re proud to team up with Notre Dame Global Partnerships and NBC for another groundbreaking basketball event,” said Tina Davis, Interim Chief Marketing Officer of Citi. “Gender equity is a key pillar of Citi’s sports sponsorships, and we want to help ensure women and girls have equal opportunities to showcase their talents. We hope events like this help put women’s sports in front of a broader audience.”
Along with the Citi Shamrock Classic entitlement position, Citi has also made an impact at Notre Dame as part of its year-round sponsorship. The global bank launched a mentorship program earlier this year specifically for student-athletes to get paired with Citi executives.
“We are thrilled to take part in this year’s Citi Shamrock Classic and have the opportunity to spotlight not only the sport of women’s basketball, but also women leaders on the heels of the 50th anniversary of Title IX,” said Illinois Women’s Basketball Head Coach Shauna Green. “The events surrounding our game against Notre Dame provide our student-athletes with the chance to network, connect, and give back in our country’s capital. On top of all of that we can’t wait to compete against an elite team on the court on national television - this is great for women’s basketball!”
Immediately following the conclusion of the Citi Shamrock Classic, the Notre Dame Football team will take center stage on NBC and Peacock with its matchup against Wake Forest in the Fighting Irish’s final home game of the season live from Notre Dame Stadium at 3:30 p.m. ET.
“We’re looking forward to presenting the Citi Shamrock Classic for a second consecutive year and continuing to showcase the Notre Dame’s women’s basketball program and the excitement of women’s sports to a national audience on NBC and Peacock,” said Gary Quinn, Vice President, Programming, NBC Sports. “With Notre Dame Football’s final home game of the season later that day on NBC and Peacock, NBC Sports will present a must-see day for Notre Dame fans across the country.”
Game tickets for the Citi Shamrock Classic will go on sale to the general public on Thursday, September 28th on this website with a presale available for Citi cardmembers https://eventsdc.com/events/citi-shamrock-classic
Notre Dame Global Partnerships, a joint venture between Legends and JMI Sports, facilitated the Citi Shamrock Classic while working with Intersport and Events DC. Other Notre Dame Athletics partners, such as Guinness, Therabody and Nissan, are associate level partners for the event.
