A Community In Full Bloom
The Kingman Park-Rosedale Community Garden (“KPR Garden”), founded in spring of 2005, provides Kingman Park and Rosedale residents with a space for growing food and connecting with neighbors. What was previously an empty parking lot, is now blooming with produce, flowers, and community interaction.
The Rosedale Citizens’ Alliance (RCA) originally purchased the Garden property in 2014, and in 2015 transferred the Garden to the Friends of Kingman Park, the civic association that represents the local neighborhood. A 99-year lease between the Garden and FOKP was executed to ensure the Garden remains a public green space for many years to come.
In 2017, a Compost Co-Op was added to the garden, in partnership with DPR. Today, there are more than 80 co-op members, making it one of the largest compost co-ops in the District, and is open to any community member who is interested in volunteering.
Today, the KPR Garden has 55 active garden plots inclusive of dozens of fruit trees that surround the perimeter of the property. In 2019, garden members constructed a water trench system throughout the garden and hosted their inaugural series of garden parties – pot luck events to bring the community members together in the serene green space.
The community garden and compost co-op is currently accepting holiday trees through January 18, to mulch and use as brown material in its compost piles.
The garden looks forward to hosting the kick-off of this year’s garden party series in mid-May.
