The Fields At RFK Campus: Now Open
Thank You To Everyone Who Came Out To The Grand Opening And Community Celebration Of The Fields At RFK Campus
Transforming asphalt into action, community residents celebrated the opening of the newest space to play in the District – The Fields at RFK Campus. Equipped with three multi-purpose turf fields to accommodate kickball, soccer, lacrosse, baseball, softball and more, the new fields represent the first completed phase of the RFK redevelopment project and what can be done through collaboration and a vision.
In Mayor Muriel Bowser’s opening ceremony remarks she quoted the late Robert Kennedy saying, “Some men see things as they are, and ask why. I dream of things that never were, and ask why not.” Events DC wants to thank everyone who helped support the dream of transforming gray to green.
Following the monumental ribbon cutting, kids raced to be the first to set foot on the turf fields, excited to experience the new space. Wayne Rooney and Bill Hamid, our featured guests, welcomed the selfies and autograph requests, making the community celebration one to be cherished.
However, the community celebration was bigger than soccer and turf fields. Equipped with glitter tattoo artists, face painters, live music (C.A.I.S.O. Steeldrum Band and DJ Farrah Flosscett), food trucks (Peruvian Brothers and Goodies Frozen Custard & Treats) and youth soccer and baseball clinics led by D.C. United and the Nationals – the event was for all community residents to enjoy.
Summing up the day perfectly, morning show host Tommy McFly said, “This weekend we took part in #dc history as @TheEventsDC delivered tons of green space back to our neighbors. What was a parking lot with no use to the community near RFK Stadium is now a vibrant place where we can all play, enjoy and connect.” We look forward to what is to come in the next chapter of the RFK Campus redevelopment and can’t wait for you to be along for the ride.

Is DC A Hub For Gold Cup Preparations And International Soccer?
ICYMI: On June 2 the men’s national soccer teams from El Salvador and Haiti squared off in a friendly match at the historic RFK Stadium. As both teams made their final tune-ups for the upcoming CONCACAF Gold Cup, 10,000 enthusiastic fans filled the bowl at RFK to watch El Salvador earn a hard-fought 1-0 victory.
Across town on June 5, the U.S. Men’s National Team faced Jamaica at Audi Field in front of 17,500 fans, with both matches showcasing Washington, DC as a hub for Gold Cup preparations and international soccer. Later in July, Audi Field will host the inaugural EA Ligue 1 Cup featuring four French professional clubs and a friendly match vs. D.C. United.

The iconic stadium has hosted more U.S. Men’s National Team matches than any other venue in the world, and is the only facility in the world to have hosted games for the FIFA World Cup (1994), the FIFA Women’s World Cup (2003), Olympic group stages for men and women (1996), the MLS Cup (1997, 2000, and 2007), the North American Soccer League’s Soccer Bowl (in 1980) and CONCACAF Champions’ Cup matches (1988 and 1998).
