TRAFFIC ADVISORY

July 20, 2023

This message provides an update regarding the streetscape construction activity underway on the exterior of the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. This work is scheduled through January 2024 and includes removal of existing trees, pavers and base material where the new planters will be installed. New trees will be planted during the spring planting season. In the interest of public safety during this process, bicycle racks are cordoning off the work area which includes the curb lane and a portion of the sidewalk, while allowing for pedestrian access.

Construction work on N Street (between Seventh and Ninth Streets, NW) has concluded.

Phase 1 construction work on the 1200 block of Ninth Street (between M and N Streets, NW) will conclude on July 21, aside from the installation of benches and the planting of trees and shrubbery, due to the planting season. Phase 2 on this block will commence this Monday, July 24 and construction work is scheduled through mid-September.

Work on the 1100 block of Ninth Street (between L and M Streets, NW) will conclude on July 21, aside from the installation of benches and the planting of trees and shrubbery, due to the planting season.

The next phase of work will begin Monday, July 24 and is scheduled until mid-November 2023 on the 1100 block of Seventh Street (between L and M Streets, NW).

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) has issued permits to the contractor for temporary occupancy of the spaces from the curb lane to the bicycle lanes. As per the approved DDOT permit, the bike lane will not be disrupted during this work. Bicycle rack barriers have been put in place for safety reasons.

The anticipated schedule for the remainder of the work (by area, weather permitting and barring unforeseen circumstances) is as follows:

  • Seventh Street (between L Street and Mt. Vernon Place, NW): late August to mid-December

  • Ninth Street (between L and Mt. Vernon Place, NW): end of October to end of January

Throughout the construction and to the extent possible, at least half of the sidewalk in each affected area will remain available for pedestrian access. There may be brief, intermittent sidewalk closures for public safety reasons.

Construction schedule dates are estimated. Updates and/or changes to the schedule will be provided as additional details become available.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.
