Traffic Advisory: Association of the United States Army (October 2023)

TRAFFIC ADVISORY

October 4, 2023

The Walter E. Washington Convention Center will host the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) on October 9 through October 11, 2023, with an estimated daily attendance of 30,000. For more information, visit https://meetings.ausa.org/annual/index.cfm.

  • Monday, October 9: 6:30 AM - 7:00 PM
  • Tuesday, October 10: 6:30 AM - 7:00 PM
  • Wednesday, October 11: 6:30 AM - 5:00 PM/ George C. Marshall Dinner 7:30 PM - 10:30 PM

L Street will be closed to vehicular traffic on:

  • Monday, October 9, 2023 6:00 AM – 9:00 PM
  • Tuesday, October 10, 2023 6:00 AM – 9:00 PM
  • Wednesday, October 11, 2023 6:00 AM – 9:00 PM

We anticipate an increase in WMATA ridership (particularly on the Yellow and Green lines at the Mount Vernon Square/Seventh Street Convention Center station) and greater demand for taxis/rideshares. This event will generate substantial vehicular and pedestrian activity in or near the Convention Center area (particularly Massachusetts Avenue, New York Avenue and Interstate 695/395).

During the following hours listed below, there will be Traffic Control Officers (TCO’s) at three locations:

  • Monday, October 9: 6:00 AM - 7:00 PM
  • Tuesday, October 10: 6:00 AM - 7:00 PM
  • Wednesday, October 11: 6:00 AM - 10:30 PM

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) Traffic Control Officers will be posted at the following three locations to direct vehicular and pedestrian traffic:

  • Seventh Street, NW at Allen Y. Lew Place, NW (formerly Mount Vernon Place)
  • Ninth Street, NW at Allen Y. Lew Place, NW

Events DC Transportation Services staff and officers of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) will manage the taxi lane on Allen Y. Lew Place, NW as well as the pedestrian crosswalk on L Street, NW. Please note that the east side of Ninth Street, NW (outside the convention center) is down to one travel lane due to an added bike lane. We are working to contain the exhibitor vehicles to L Street (outside the center between Seventh and Ninth streets), to reduce the impact of traffic going to the ABC Loading Docks.

Events DC Transportation Services is also increasing exterior patrols of the convention center. Additional exterior patrols have been requested from the MPD’s Third District during this event.

Appropriate District agencies have been contacted for heightened traffic monitoring and enforcement of parking regulations in the area surrounding the Convention Center.

Between the morning of October 3 through the evening of October 8, there will be significant freight operation on the exterior of the Convention Center that will impact the bicycle lanes on Ninth Street between L and M Street and M Street between Seventh and Ninth Street. During this time frame, large military apparatus (tanks, personal carriers, etc.) will be moved into the Convention Center. Intermittent traffic congestion is anticipated. Bicycle lanes in this area will be temporarily closed. However, they will be open between October 9-11 during the AUSA Conference. The bicycle lanes will again be temporarily closed between October 11-14 while AUSA moves out of the Convention Center. Thereafter the bicycle lanes will operate as normal on Ninth Street between L and M Street.

Thank you for your patience and understanding. Please join us in welcoming the Association of the United States Army attendees to our community!
