TRAFFIC ADVISORY
July 5, 2024

From Tuesday, July 9, 2024, through Thursday, July 11, 2024, the 75th NATO Summit will take place in the District of Columbia. The NATO Summit is a National Special Security Event (NSSE). An NSSE is an event of national or international significance deemed by the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to be a potential target for terrorism or other criminal activity. These events may include summits of world leaders, meetings of international organizations, presidential nominating conventions and presidential inaugurations. As the nation's capital, Washington, DC is frequently the setting for NSSE-designated events. Numerous law enforcement agencies, including the Metropolitan Police Department, the United States Secret Service and other public safety entities will be providing security for the event to ensure the safety of visiting dignitaries, attendees and members of the public.

On Monday, July 1, 2024, the Secret Service, Mayor Bowser and federal partners held a public safety briefing where security impacts and preparations were discussed:

Road Closures, Parking Restrictions and Transit Impacts

Security zones around both the Walter E. Washington Convention Center and the International Trade Center will close off several streets to traffic, including transit vehicles. Metrobus, Metrorail and MetroAccess services will also be impacted in the area around the Convention Center. MetroAccess will run normal service; however, customers may not be able to reach their final destination due to road closures. MetroAccess will work with customers to get as close to the destination as possible. Customers who use stations or bus routes in this area should allow additional travel time to account for detours and delays. Visit https://www.wmata.com/service/index.cfm to plan your commute ahead of time.
