Foo Fighters Celebrate 20th Anniversary at RFK Stadium
RFK Stadium hosted the Foo Fighters’ 20th anniversary extravaganza on Saturday, July 4, 2015. The blockbuster announcement to play at RFK followed a Washington Post review of the band's intimate performance at the Black Cat in late October 2014. Dave McKenna writes, “The Foo Fighters could have gigged at RFK Stadium instead of spending the night at a cozy rock club.”
Turning review into reality, the Foo Fighters’ RFK performance was their biggest U.S. headline engagement to date. To mark the band’s 20th anniversary, the celebration included an all-day affair featuring a BBQ, motorcycle rally and fireworks display at the RFK Stadium campus.
"RFK is an iconic American venue and the Foo Fighters are a classic American band. I couldn't think of a better way to celebrate America's birthday than to rock out in DC with the Foo Fighters and a star-studded group of guest artists on the 4th of July,” said Erik A. Moses, managing director of Events DC’s Sports and Entertainment Division. “This concert will definitely be added to the rich musical history of RFK and provided another generation of DC residents and visitors the opportunity to experience a once in a lifetime musical performance."
The all-star supporting line-up featured an awe-inspiring assortment of musical ambassadors of the eight cities where the new Foo Fighters album Sonic Highways was recorded and the band’s HBO docu-series Foo Fighters’ Sonic Highways was filmed. Special guest performances included Chicago’s own Buddy Guy, Gary Clark Jr. to represent Austin and from Seattle, Heart. Representing Los Angeles with ties to New York, was longtime Foo Fighters comrade in arms Joan Jett, who recently joined Foo Fighters Dave Grohl and Pat Smear for Nirvana’s induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Lauded New York hip-hop artist LL Cool J also made a special appearance featuring DJ Z-Trip. Rounding out this once in a lifetime who’s who of musical greatness, was DC hometown legends and kings of go-go Trouble Funk and representing New Orleans, the incomparable Trombone Shorty.
