Washington, DC's RFK Stadium To Be Demolished By 2021
From hosting amazing concerts to historic sporting events, the RFK Stadium will always hold a special place in our hearts.
Consistent with short-term redevelopment plans, Events DC announced last week the issuance of an RFP for the demolition of RFK Stadium. The facility is 58-years old and has exceeded its useful life. We are spending over $3M a year to maintain the facility; however, we have very little event activity or programming. Decommissioning and demolishing a project of this scale requires significant planning, labor and due diligence, which is expected to take
months. That’s why it is imperative for us to identify a qualified contractor who will assist us in the planning and regulatory process, including impact to the surrounding neighborhoods and any environmental effects.
We will continue to work with our partners, inclusive of the National Park Service and other various agencies as part of this process. We will continue to operate the facility while simultaneously planning the demolition activities. We look forward to sharing updates and soliciting community input at upcoming meetings.”

RFK Stadium To Host The High School Kickoff Classic
Don’t miss the local high school football showcase this Saturday!
On Saturday, September 14, the historic RFK Stadium will once again come to life to host the Events DC Kickoff Classic. The 2nd annual installation of the event, the Kickoff Classic is a high school football showcase featuring four DC high schools to celebrate the storied tradition of football at RFK Stadium. The event also marks a continuation of Events DC’s Amateur Sports Initiative, a multi-year program designed to recognize amateur sports – from football and basketball to pole vaulting and high-speed racing – around the greater Washington, DC area.
The action kicks off at 2:00 PM featuring Woodrow Wilson High School vs. Archbishop Carroll High School. The second game is a highly anticipated rematch from 2018 of two Ward 7 rivals – H.D. Woodson High School vs. Friendship Collegiate Academy. Both games will include a youth flag football game during halftime as well as giveaways for fans courtesy of Pepsi.

Capitol Hill Little League Kicks Off Its Inaugural Season
Taking place at The Fields at RFK Campus, families came together where asphalt used to stand.
“What an honor! Capitol Hill Little League played their first games at The Fields at RFK today! Glad to toss out a first pitch! Seeing kids in action, families packing the stands, & tons more filling the playground –where oceans of empty asphalt once stood –was always the point!”
The Fields were swinging as the Capitol Hill Little League (CHLL) hosted its inaugural fall season on Saturday, September 7, 2019! Founded in 2011, CHLL is an all-volunteer operated organization that provides the opportunity for children to play, learn, and love the games of baseball and softball. In early 2019, the organization announced its new Challenger League, inclusive of children of all abilities.
CHLL hosted their Opening Day ceremonies at The Fields at RFK Campus, with the first pitch being thrown by Ward 6 Councilmember, Charles Allen. Posting moments from the event via Twitter, Allen tweeted, “What an honor! Capitol Hill Little League played their first games at The Fields at RFK today! Glad to toss out a first pitch! Experience some of the best that Washington, DC has to offer by participating in Cultural Toursim DC’s WalkingTown DC, a public tour program that features more than 50 guided walking tours in neighborhoods across the District.
Sponsored by Events DC, WalkingTown DC is underway from Saturday, September 14 through Sunday, September 22, 2019. This annual event, which has been running for nearly two decades, offers residents and visitors alike an ever-growing art culture and history of Washington, DC through a variety of lunchtime, happy hour and weekend tours.
WalkingTown DC participants may enjoy well-known places such as the U.S. Capitol Grounds and U.S. Botanic Garden; as well as hidden gems that make up the rich fabric of our city – including Art At the Center, a curator-led tour of the permanent art collection at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.
“WalkingTown DC is our longest-running program,” Steve Shulman, executive director of Cultural Tourism DC, said. “For nearly 20 years, through the kindness of professional tour guides and people who are passionate about their neighborhoods, we have been able to offer tours that help people learn about the District of Columbia, home to more than 700,000 people, and about Washington, the capital of the nation. Art All Night DC
Don’t miss Washington’s annual free overnight arts festival this weekend!
If you’re ready for a colorful whirlwind of visual and performing arts, look no further than the 8th annual Art All Night: Nuit Blanche DC, a free, eight-hour arts festival that takes place in eight communities throughout the nation’s capital on Saturday, September 14th from 7:00 PM to 3:00 AM.
Kicked off in DC’s historic Shaw neighborhood in 2011, Art All Night DC was based on Nuit Blanche, a similar citywide event in Paris. Each community has its own theme and may offer painting, photography, sculpture, crafts, fashion, music, dance, theater, film, poetry, and live entertainment in indoor and outdoor public and private spaces, including businesses.
Shaw is home to the Walter E. Washington Convention Center and Events DC is excited to participate in Shaw Art All Night this year by having an “ArtTastic Voyage” interactive mural painting and a live DJ spinning popular music incorporating the #ShawtasticVoyage theme on the Apple Carnegie Library grounds from 7:00 p.m. until midnight.
“Art All Night in Shaw will bring over 25,000 people from DC and beyond to the neighborhood for an eight-hour celebration of the city’s arts scene,” says Alexander M. Padro, executive director of Shaw Main Streets and a founder of the festival. “With so many free experiences available, you could spend all eight hours in Shaw and not see, hear and do everything offered.”
