Washington, DC – Events DC, the official convention and sports authority for the nation’s capital, announced today their sponsorship of "Soccer in the Circle," a FIFA World Cup cultural celebration with live match screenings presented by The Welsh Government and Dupont Festival. The free, all-ages event will take place in Dupont Circle National Park on Monday, November 21st.
The cultural celebration that is centered around community and a collective passion for soccer will begin at 9 AM. Festivities will include a live painting collaboration between a Welsh and American artist, a DJ sponsored by the Dupont Circle BID, a live screening of the Netherlands vs Senegal FIFA World Cup match at 11 AM ET, Welsh culinary favorites, a raffle, giveaways, and a live screening of the USA vs Wales game at 2 PM ET.
“Dupont Festival is proud to host our 4th World Cup viewing watch party in Dupont Circle National Park. We are grateful to work with our partners at the Government of Wales and to all our sponsors,” said President and Founder of Dupont Festival, Aaron DeNu.
“There are historic and deep connections between Wales and the USA, and it is fitting that we begin our World Cup journey together. This will be a great event for Americans, Welsh, and Welsh-Americans to come together and celebrate our shared love of sport, and what both countries have achieved by qualifying for this World Cup,” said Vaughan Gething MS, Minister for Economy, Welsh Government.
Back in 2010, Dupont Festival was the first organizer to host an official FIFA World Cup celebration in the District of Columbia. This event marks the 4th World Cup viewing event that Dupont Festival has organized in Dupont Circle, the heart of the nation’s capital. The Dupont Circle BID and Events DC are sponsoring this year’s event.
"Soccer in the Circle’ promises to be much more than just a watch party. Bringing together the Welsh Government and many of our District partners is part of a dynamic cultural and sporting experience unique to Washington, DC,” said Ralph Morton, senior vice president and managing director, Sports & Entertainment Division at Events DC. “With some of the most passionate, knowledgeable and globally-minded fans in the nation, we are looking forward to creating a memorable occasion on November 21 to celebrate these historic and highly anticipated matches.”
“With the Circle being a symbol of unity, I couldn’t think of a better location to host a live viewing of the World Cup’s opening games,” said Colleen Hawkinson, executive director of the Dupont Circle BID. Through providing a shared global experience that brings people together in the center of DC’s international heart, ‘Soccer in the Circle’ is a striking expression of unity. The Dupont Circle BID is honored to partner with Dupont Festival, the Welsh Government, and Events DC to bring this event to the neighborhood.”
