October 2022 Update

Work continues in the abatement and select demolition of the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium during October 2022.

Smoot Construction Company of Washington, DC (SmootDC) and their sub-consultants continue the asbestos abatement work, universal waste removal, disposal of non-hazardous materials and demolition of non-structural components within the stadium. This work will go on through this fall and into winter.

Work takes place according to the DC Consumer and Regulatory Agency’s (DCRA) noise regulations, which are from Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. However, Saturday work is anticipated to be limited at this time.

All abatement and hazardous waste removal activities are being monitored by ECS Mid-Atlantic, LLC, an environmental consultant contracted by Events DC. In addition, SmootDC will continue to monitor noise and dust levels around the site with hand-held readers. To date, all readings have been normal.

Truck traffic is limited to local deliveries, equipment drop-off and weekly haul-off of materials. Hauling and local delivery routes are designed to keep trucks out of the neighborhood. Trucks will be routed to/from the stadium ring road via the Whitney Young Memorial Bridge and I-295 North/South. For local deliveries, trucks will access the stadium via Independence Avenue and exit via C Street, S.E.

Cell phone carriers decommissioned their antennas at the stadium and have established, or are in the process of establishing, new sites to provide cell service to the surrounding area.

Events DC has removed and preserved memorabilia, monuments, plaques, signs, etc. in advance of non-structural demolition activities. The bust of RFK and Gideon’s Garden remain accessible to the public.

Also, SmootDC has been and will continue to remove spectator seating from within the stadium bowl. Information regarding the sale and distribution of seats will be provided in the coming weeks.

Farewell events and a demolition kick-off event are also being planned. Stay tuned on EventsDC.com for upcoming news and information.
