Celebrating Black History Month

Wishing everyone a happy Black History Month! Events DC prides itself on celebrating Black History Month, where we honor and celebrate Washington, DC’s rich Black history. Ward 7 has many areas to recognize:

• Langston Golf Course opened in 1939 where African-American golfers were able to play. It was supported by Washington, DC’s first black female golf club, the Wake Robin Golf Club, and the Royal Golf Club (formerly the Capital City Golf Club).

• Suburban Gardens was based in Deanwood as the District’s first and only amusement park open to African-Americans in 1921. It was also created by the Universal Development and Loan Company, a black-owned real estate and development company.

• Woodlawn Cemetery, located in Benning Ridge, serves as the final resting place for nearly 6,000 prominent Washingtonians.

• The Deanwood School was the first public school for African-Americans in Deanwood, which is currently IDEA Charter School.

Learn more facts about Ward 7 and beyond on the African-American Heritage Trails throughout the District. Additionally, our partner Destination DC has curated multiple lists where you can learn and celebrate Washington, DC’s Black history and to support the District’s black-owned establishments.

Blossom Kicks for Kids

Get ready to blossom in style! The National Cherry Blossom Festival, along with presenting sponsor Events DC, invites Washington, DC students (grades 5-8) from all eight wards to showcase their creativity in the Blossom Kicks for Kids Program. This exciting program empowers students to tap into their passion for fashion and design by creating unique cleat designs inspired by the beauty of cherry blossoms and the spirit of international friendship. Don’t miss your chance to step into spring through art and design—one cleat at a time!

The theme this year is “Art of The Game,” which empowers young designers to transform cleats as they portray their connections to cherry blossoms and soccer.

Key Dates:

• Shoe designs are due on Sunday, March 1 at midnight.
• Shoe Design Day is on Sunday, March 22 (time and location TBA).
