WASHINGTON, DC (November 10, 2021) – The Georgetown University women’s basketball team announced it will play host to the UConn Huskies at Entertainment & Sports Arena, home of the WNBA’s Washington Mystics, located in Southeast, Washington, D.C. In conjunction with Events DC, the Hoyas will host the Huskies in a BIG EAST showdown on Wednesday, January 5 at 7 p.m. Tickets for the must-see matchup will be available on Ticketmaster.com starting Thursday, November 18 at 10 a.m., with an exclusive presale for Hoya supporters starting on Tuesday, November 16.
This will be the 55th meeting between the squads and just the third since the Huskies rejoined the BIG EAST in 2020. Georgetown is coached by Head Coach James Howard in his fifth season on the Hilltop. UConn is the reigning BIG EAST Champion as well as an 11-time NCAA Champion. Last season, the Huskies advanced to the NCAA Final Four and featured consensus NCAA Player of the Year Paige Bueckers as well as Hall of Fame Coach Geno Auriemma.
“We are so excited to be playing in a WNBA arena here in the District,” said Howard. “We can’t wait to pack the house with Hoya supporters and to develop some new women’s basketball fans from a different part of the city. This is a great opportunity for us to showcase what the BIG EAST has to offer.”
Entertainment & Sports Arena is where fans want to be. Opened in 2018, the 4,200-seat Arena is a hub for professional and collegiate sports, concerts, esports, boxing, and more. Entertainment & Sports Arena is home court for the WNBA Champion Washington Mystics and Capital City Go-Go of the NBA G League. The Arena is also home of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Men’s Basketball Championship and the official training facility for the NBA Washington Wizards. Located on the historic St. Elizabeths Campus in DC’s Congress Heights neighborhood, the Arena is located just a short 3-minute walk from the Congress Heights station on Metro’s Green Line.
“Events DC is honored to host Georgetown University and the University of Connecticut at Entertainment & Sports Arena,” said Gregory A. O’Dell, president and chief executive officer of Events DC. “Bringing together the Georgetown Hoyas, one of DC’s hometown favorites and the iconic UConn Huskies, winners of a record 11 NCAA National Championships, is an exciting opportunity to showcase some of the most talented student athletes in the nation. We’re looking forward to presenting this game in the heart of DC’s Ward 8 and inviting fans, alumni and the greater community to experience world-class college basketball.”
Along with exciting basketball, the game will serve as a kickoff event for Georgetown’s year-long celebration honoring female student-athletes on the Hilltop which dates back 70 years. This year, in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of Title IX, GU will celebrate all female Hoyas that have worn the Blue & Gray. From humble beginnings to national champions, on the track, on the field, in the water and on the court they have broken countless barriers and represented the University worldwide. Throughout the year, the Department will be remembering trailblazers, saluting standouts and celebrating the many contributions of women’s sports on the Hilltop.
