Emmy Awards

Washington, DC – (June 28, 2022) - Events DC, the official convention and sports authority for the District of Columbia, is celebrating a Capital Emmy© Award win in the category of Best Historical/Cultural Short Form Content for Embassy Chef Challenge: Afghanistan. The honor marks the first Emmy award for a program created for and hosted on GATHER, Events DC’s new hub for dynamic live and on-demand event programming from the worlds of sports, entertainment, culture, hospitality and more.

Beyond this win, Events DC had a total of three nominations in the 64th Capital Emmy© Awards. The short documentary, The Pins of Madeleine Albright, which explores the intersection of diplomacy and the way we dress, was nominated for Best Documentary – Cultural/Topical, and Sticks and Stones: The Creator's Game, an intimate look at the origins and future of lacrosse, was also recognized in the Best Sports Story – Long Form Content category.

"I am immensely proud of our team and the culture of innovation at Events DC that helped make this achievement possible," said Samuel Thomas, interim president and chief executive officer of Events DC. "This Emmy recognizes our commitment to diverse event programming and enriching our communities through engaging, shared experiences. I am excited to see Events DC recognized as a leader as we look toward the future of conventions and meetings, sports and entertainment."

"We are so incredibly humbled and honored to receive this recognition for Embassy Chef Challenge: Afghanistan from the Capital Emmy© Awards," said Jinhee Kim, chief creative officer at Events DC.  "We are proud of the stories we tell on GATHER by Events DC and pride ourselves in creating high-quality content that uncovers and showcases the dynamic stories found in every corner of Washington, DC. Thank you to those who enjoyed our series, and we could not be more appreciative to receive this momentous tribute."

Inspired by Events DC’s annual embassy chef competition, Embassy Chef Challenge is a short documentary series that explores the power of food to connect cultures. In this installment, Roya Rahmani shares how food provided her a sense of home throughout her life, from fleeing violence in her country as a child to becoming the first female ambassador of Afghanistan. Embassy Chef Challenge: Afghanistan was produced by Events DC’s Creative Services Division (Jesse Devlin-Whitworth, Executive Producer) and Aster Creative Co (Jamie Sisley, Director; Miguel “MiG” Martinez, Producer) with support from Pepsi and Jan Du Plain.

The Events DC Embassy Chef Challenge will return as live, in-person event in the fall of 2022. The 12th edition of the annual event celebrates culinary diplomacy and provides a uniquely DC opportunity to taste authentic food and drinks from embassy chefs representing all regions of the world. Globally inspired performances will provide entertainment throughout the evening. More details including date, time, location and ticket information will be shared on EventsDC.com in the coming weeks.

“We feel honored to receive this Emmy© for a story whose subject we found truly inspiring. We would like to dedicate this award to Afghan Ambassador Roya Rahmani for allowing us to tell her story,” said Jamie Sisley and Miguel “M.i.G.” Martinez from Aster Creative Co. “We would also like to thank Events DC for the opportunity to make this film, Jan Du Plain for connecting us with the embassy community, and the Capital Emmys for this lovely recognition.”
