Embassy open houses, global cuisine, traditional performances, international vendors and more are celebrated each May in Washington, DC as part of Events DC’s Passport DC, now in its 18th year. May, known as International Cultural Awareness Month, is filled with activities that are great for the whole family and offer unique insight into global culture.
“Passport DC is one of Washington, DC’s most cherished traditions," said Events DC President and CEO Angie M. Gates. "This hallmark event truly embodies the essence of our city: dynamic, inclusive and globally connected. Each year, it serves as a reminder that despite our diverse backgrounds, we can unite through art, culture, cuisine and shared experiences. Throughout the month of May, we look forward to welcoming residents and visitors to explore the world through extraordinary events in our nation’s capital."
Hundreds of thousands of Washingtonians and visitors participate in the signature weekend events, beginning with Flower Mart at the National Cathedral on May 2 and 3. Embassies present floral arrangements using their native flora in the International Floral Exhibit. While outside of the cathedral, local shops, eateries and activities are set up for the public. For 86 years, All Hallows Guild has produced Flower Mart which benefits the care and maintenance of the 59 acres of gardens, grounds and woodlands that surround the cathedral.
“Flower Mart at the National Cathedral is a beloved D.C. tradition, bringing families and individuals together for a weekend of food, fun and flowers,” said Carrie Tydings, Flower Mart communications. “There are more than 60 vendors and 20 different food vendors for shoppers and foodies and an array of activities including children's rides and games, the antique carousel, international Embassy floral display and, for the daring among you, there will be a Tower Climb for some of the best views in Washington. Really, Flower Mart has something for everyone!”
The International City Festival, held on May 2 and 3 at The Square, is two days complimenting the opening weekend of Passport DC. More than 30 retailers, at least one dozen ethnic restaurants and several workshops will take place.
The acclaimed Around the World Embassy Tour is on May 3, where non-European embassies open their doors to the public. In addition to cultural activities, music and tourism information, many embassies offer traditional food and drink. For example, the Republic of Serbia will highlight EXPO 2027, which will be hosted in Belgrade and showcase the latest in architectural, technological, and scientific discoveries. The State of Qatar plans to feature henna artists and calligraphers. The Republic of Korea will have a K-Pop dance performance and games featured in Netflix’s “Squid Games.”
The following weekend, 26 embassies of the European Union Open House welcomes guests to learn more about their countries and customs.
EU Ambassador to the U.S. Jovita Neliupšienė said, “The EU Open House brings the cultures and flavours of Europe to the people of DC each year, in celebration of the European Union’s founding. It’s a chance for everyone to visit Europe without having to leave home and to get a first-hand look inside the embassies that are right here, in your backyard. All are welcome. No passport required.”
Fiesta Asia Street Fair will be celebrating its 20th anniversary on Pennsylvania Avenue NW on Saturday, May 17th. The event is the longest running, most inclusive and the largest free Pan-Asian Festival in the Washington, DC Metropolitan area. “We are so excited to celebrate our 20th anniversary. We always pride ourselves on presenting our festival with authenticity, wholesomeness and accessibility. Never has Washington, DC or anywhere else for that matter seen so many dragons and lions commingling on an open street. Everyone is welcome to partake as a dragon performer or simply come as a cheering spectator – do not miss the opportunity to celebrate Asian heritage with us,” said Wuiping Yap with the Asia Heritage Foundation.
