TRAFFIC ADVISORY

February 1, 2024

This message provides an update regarding the streetscape construction activity underway on the exterior of the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. This work is scheduled through February 2024 and includes removal of existing trees, pavers and base material where the new planters will be installed. New trees have been planted in replacement of the former trees that were removed. In the interest of public safety during this process and when necessary, bicycle racks are cordoning off the work area which includes the curb lane and a portion of the sidewalk, while allowing for pedestrian access.

  • Construction work on N Street (between Seventh and Ninth Streets, NW) has concluded. Planter boxes and benches are installed; trees and shrubbery are planted.

  • Work on the 1000 through 1200 blocks of Ninth Street (between Allen Y. Lew Place and N Streets, NW) has concluded. Planter boxes and benches are installed; trees and most shrubbery are planted, but more along the 1000 block will be planted in the spring when planting season commences.

  • Work on the 1000 and 1100 blocks of Seventh Street (between Allen Y. Lew Place and M Streets, NW) has concluded. Planter boxes and benches are installed; trees and shrubbery are planted.

When/where applicable: The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) has issued permits to the contractor for temporary occupancy of the spaces from the curb lane to the bicycle lanes. As per the approved DDOT permit, the bike lane will not be disrupted during this work. Bicycle rack barriers have been put in place for safety reasons.

The anticipated schedule for the remainder of the work (by area, weather permitting and barring unforeseen circumstances) is as follows:

  • Ninth Street (between L and Allen Y. Lew Place, NW): Shrubbery will be planted in the spring when planting season commences

  • We have begun changing out all the bulbs of the streetlights around the building, per requirement by DDOT. This work involves repainting the streetlight poles once weather permits.

Throughout the construction and to the extent possible, at least half of the sidewalk in each affected area will remain available for pedestrian access. There may be brief, intermittent sidewalk closures for public safety reasons.

Construction schedule dates are estimated. Updates and/or changes to the schedule will be provided as additional details become available.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.
