NICE CROWD, in partnership with Events DC, proudly announces the successful conclusion of the 2024 Because They're Funny (BTF) Comedy Festival. The three-day event dedicated to showcasing the wealth of diverse talent in the comedy arena was held at The Wharf’s premier venues from September 27-29, 2024.
Building on its acclaimed debut in 2023, recognized by USA Today as one of the Top 10 New Events of the Year, the second installment welcomed over 4,000 attendees, uniting comedy enthusiasts and industry insiders for an unforgettable weekend filled with laughter and inspiration. Attendees were treated to an all-star lineup featuring three-time Primetime Emmy Award nominee Leslie Jones and the incredibly talented Deon Cole, known for his standout roles in "Black-ish" and "The Color Purple." The festival also celebrated the future of comedy with the exciting "Breakout Comedian of the Year" competition, showcasing some of the brightest up-and-coming talents from across the nation.
Kicking of the festival on September 27, the Opening Night Reception honored legendary comedian George Wallace with the BTF Comedy Trailblazer Award. Additionally, net proceeds from the evening benefited DC Central Kitchen, a local nonprofit dedicated to fighting hunger and poverty through innovative job training and creation programs—underscoring BTF's mission to leverage comedy for good.
Deon Cole hosted the 2nd annual Breakout Comedian of the Year Competition, aimed at discovering and nurturing emerging BIPOC comedians by connecting them with career opportunities in the entertainment industry. This year’s finalists— Sammy Anzer, Alex Babbit, Flo Hernandez, Lamar Jones, Mel Mitchell and Khrissy Y.S.F.—battled it out during the grand finale on September 28. Flo Hernandez wowed both the audience and judges with an outstanding performance, ultimately taking home the coveted $10,000 grand prize and securing representation with Innovative Artists talent agency. On Sunday, September 29, Leslie Jones brought her sharp wit and dynamic energy to The Anthem stage for a hilarious headline performance.
"Building on last year's incredible debut, this year's festival exceeded our expectations — showcasing the power of laughter in bringing people together while uplifting diverse voices in comedy,” said Jeff Friday, Founder of NICE CROWD and visionary behind BTF. “From spotlighting legends like George Wallace to ushering new comics into the comedy space, BTF is a celebration of talent, creativity and community. We're proud to continue our mission of providing a platform for BIPOC comedians and leveraging comedy to create a meaningful impact both on and of the stage."

featuring veteran DC improvisers; Sketch Comedy 101 Master Class, which taught the essentials of sketch writing and storytelling; and Life of a Comedian, a panel delving into the artistry and hustle that shape a comedian’s journey.
